Remembering Picatinny Arsenal’s 1926 Explosion

Event to be held at Morris County Library, 30 E Hanover Ave, Whippany, NJ 07981. Morris County Historical Society and Morris County Heritage Commission are pleased to present a Revolutionary Lecture Series to celebrate the rich and vast history that makes Morris County so special…

On a hot July evening in 1926, lightning hit a storehouse full of surplus WWI explosives at what is now Picatinny Arsenal, and the resulting blast is considered one of the worst man-made explosions in US history. On July 15 at 6 p.m., Morris County Historical Society and Morris County Heritage Commission bring that story to life at Morris County Library in Whippany, with Jason Huggan and Jeff Ranu of Picatinny Arsenal walking through the lead-up, recently discovered footage of the aftermath, and the changes that followed. It’s free, but space is limited, so pre-registration is required. A Zoom option is available too. Register at morriscountyhistory.org.
